Liberty Head Coach Hugh Freeze Describes the Emotional Rollercoaster

Freeze Steps Down as Rebels Head Coach, Returns to Coaching at Liberty

The coaching journey of Hugh Freeze took an unexpected turn when he faced a severe health setback prior to the start of the 2019 season. Freeze stepped down as the Rebels head coach in July 2017 after a scandal surrounding a female escort service.

Despite these challenges, Freeze remained determined to return to coaching. In December 2018, he was named the head coach of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. His return to the sidelines was met with both excitement and skepticism.

Just weeks before the start of the 2019 season, Freeze was hospitalized with a staph infection. The illness was so severe that he was forced to coach the Flames' first game from his hospital bed. In a remarkable display of resilience, Freeze led Liberty to a 48-41 victory over Syracuse.

Freeze's story is one of adversity and triumph. He has overcome significant obstacles to return to coaching, and his success at Liberty is a testament to his determination and perseverance.
