Fatal Rabies Disease Transmitted Through Animal Bites

Five Human Infections Reported in EUEEA Countries in 2019

Experts Emphasize Prevention Measures for Rabies Control

WEB Rabies, a deadly disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, continues to pose a significant threat. In 2019, the European Union/European Economic Area (EUEEA) countries reported five human Lyssavirus infections, a concerning statistic that highlights the importance of rabies prevention measures.

Italy reported four human cases of travel-related rabies, while three imported cases were reported in 2014. Additionally, a small number of human cases are reported in Europe every year, underscoring the ongoing presence of this preventable disease.

Rabies is caused by a virus that primarily spreads through the bite of an infected animal, including dogs, bats, raccoons, and skunks. The virus attacks the nervous system, causing severe neurological symptoms and ultimately leading to death if not treated promptly.

To prevent rabies, experts emphasize the importance of vaccinating pets, avoiding contact with wild animals, and seeking immediate medical attention after any animal bite or scratch. Rabies vaccines are highly effective in preventing the disease, and prompt treatment can save lives.
